US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement has been signed with Denmark and Greenland that provides the US with permanent control over security and all other needs, fully addressing many of Washington's concerns, stating, "We will immediately begin the process of establishing a large military presence in a suitable area of Greenland. From now on, no US adversary will be able to establish a base, maintain a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our written consent."

US President Donald Trump made a striking statement regarding the relations between his country, Denmark, and the autonomous territory of Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. In a statement on his social media account, Trump reported that an agreement had been reached between the countries, saying, "I am pleased to announce that the United States has signed an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland that provides the US with permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland, and fully addresses many of the US's concerns."

Underlining that the agreement in question will have no cost to the US, Trump stated, "In accordance with my instructions, we have worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to ensure that the US has the authority to do whatever is necessary in Greenland to ensure and defend the security of the US and Greenland forever. From now on, no US adversary will be able to establish a base, maintain a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our explicit written consent."

Trump said, "Previous US Presidents have been aware of Greenland's strategic importance for over 100 years, but none of them were able to do anything about it. I am proud to be the president who has resolved this extremely important situation in a permanent and definitive way. This is an 'Eternal Life' agreement; it has no expiration date. We are greatly honored and proud of this development; everything agreed upon today will always be valued by the American people."

"We will immediately begin the process of establishing a military presence"

The US President stated, "We will immediately begin the process of establishing a large military presence in a suitable area of Greenland. We will work with the people of Greenland in the development and construction of these structures. This solution is an extremely positive one for the US, Denmark, Greenland, and all our allies. We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland for a magnificent future regarding the future of this vast and highly strategic piece of land."

Highlighting the importance of this decision for the US, Trump declared, "We will protect Greenland very strongly. This is a dream come true for the US."

The Trump administration's insistence on the Greenland issue

Due to its strategic location in the Arctic region, Greenland has long been at the center of security debates between the US, Denmark, and Europe. While Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with foreign policy, security, and defense powers held in Copenhagen, the island is under the security umbrella of NATO.

The Trump administration's insistence this year on establishing US control over Greenland had led to tension between Washington and the Copenhagen administration. While Denmark and other European countries emphasized that the decision regarding Greenland's future belongs to Denmark and Greenland, the Greenlandic government had stated that the island's defense should be conducted within the framework of NATO. There has been no statement from Denmark yet regarding the details of the agreement announced by Trump.
