Trump praises AfD election result: A very big success

Former US President Donald Trump described the result achieved by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the elections held in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt as a “very big success.”

In a post on his social media account, Trump praised the AfD’s election performance and targeted Germany’s immigration policies. In his post, Trump stated, “They are finally tired of those extremely terrible immigration rules and regulations that have caused great harm to Germany.”

Arguing that the AfD is on the rise, Trump stated that Germany “will no longer tolerate” its current immigration policies.

In the State Parliament elections held in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6, the AfD became the leading party with 43.8 percent of the vote. However, the party could not secure the necessary majority to form a government on its own.

In the election, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) fell to second place with 17.2 percent of the vote, losing 19.9 points compared to 2021. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) increased its vote share by 0.9 points, coming in third with 9.3 percent.

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) received 5.3 percent of the vote and earned the right to enter the state parliament. According to assessments in the German media, parties other than the BSW refuse to form a government with the AfD. For this reason, a government scenario in which the BSW supports the AfD from the outside is also being discussed in the state.
