Trump targets New York Mayor Mamdani

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at the America First Policy Institute forum held in Miami, Florida. Trump targeted Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Party candidate who became the first Muslim elected as Mayor of New York.

Stating that the American people regained their sovereignty by electing him president, Trump said, "Last night in New York, we lost a bit of our sovereignty. But we will deal with it."

Implicitly criticizing the election campaign Mamdani ran on promises to lower the cost of living, Trump stated that mayors and governors would try to lower prices in the U.S. and receive praise for it, but that they "do nothing."

"HAVE TO CHOOSE"

Noting that the difference between the two parties is clearer following last night's election results, Trump said, "Americans have to choose between 'communism and common sense.' While our opponents offer an economic nightmare, we offer economic success. While they put America last, we put America first."

Claiming that Mamdani is a "communist," Trump used the phrase, "We skipped the socialist and put in a communist instead." Trump stated that New Yorkers would flee from "communism" due to Mamdani's victory, adding, "I hope it works out well for New York."

Mamdani denies being a "communist" and identifies himself with "democratic socialism." There is no clear definition of the ideology in question, but it essentially means giving a voice to workers rather than corporations. Mamdani had promised to tax millionaires to cover the costs of expanded social programs.

FIRST MUSLIM MAYOR OF NEW YORK

Mamdani, the Democratic Party candidate and the first Muslim Mayor of New York, declared victory after receiving approximately 54 percent of the vote. Reaching a wide voter base with his Queens-based campaign, Mamdani, who was born in Uganda to parents of Indian descent, holds the titles of New York's first Muslim mayor, first Africa-born mayor, and first mayor of South Asian descent. In the election, Mamdani's closest rival, independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, received approximately 40 percent of the vote.
