Trump's conviction divides the US!

While some Americans celebrated the conviction of former US President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the "hush money" trial in New York, others continued to express their support for the former president.

Donald Trump headed to Trump Tower in Manhattan after the jury reached a guilty verdict.

While police took extensive security measures in the area, some Trump supporters and opponents gathered in front of the building, alongside curious citizens passing by.

Trump opponents chanted "Lock him up," while some citizens supported Trump with US flags and "Never surrender" signs. Verbal altercations occurred between the two groups from time to time.

"I AM PROUD OF OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM"

Sally Kaplan, a member of the group in front of the building, said that as a US citizen, she was incredibly proud of the democracy she lives in.

Kaplan said, "I am incredibly proud that the jury in this case found Donald Trump guilty on 34 different counts because this must have been quite a frightening thing for the jury. I am proud of our justice system and I am proud of America because no one in the US is above the law."

Stating that Trump has many followers and that she fears this decision will make them even angrier at the Democrats, Kaplan expressed that President Joe Biden needs to run a better campaign from now on to be trusted.

Another citizen, who only gave her name as Gabby, said, "I think it's sad that we have a Republican candidate who has been convicted of many crimes."

Noting that she does not have much faith that Trump's conviction will have any impact on the presidential election to be held in November, Gabby added that she thinks his supporters will continue to support Trump.

TRUMP'S "HUSH MONEY" TRIAL

Former US President Trump was indicted by a grand jury on March 18, 2023, as part of an investigation conducted by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office regarding an illegal "hush money" payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.

Trump appeared in court in New York on April 4, 2023, on charges of falsifying business records related to "hush money." Denying the 34 separate charges against him, Trump described the allegations as a "political witch hunt" and stated that he viewed the charges as "election interference."

As a result of the trial, which lasted 6 weeks in New York, Trump was found guilty by the jury yesterday on all 34 counts.

Thus, Trump went down in history as the first former president in US history to appear in court due to charges brought against him and to be found guilty by a jury.

The hearing to determine Trump's sentence will be held on July 11, 2024.
