For the first time since July 2022, a death sentence has been carried out in Japan. The person executed was Shiraishi Takahiro, known as the "Twitter killer." Shiraishi had been found guilty of murdering 9 people he met through the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
In 2017, Shiraishi was arrested after body parts belonging to 8 women and one man were found in coolers in his apartment. Shiraishi, who was sentenced to death in 2020, was executed at the Tokyo Detention Center. The process was kept secret from the public until the execution was completed.
Authorities stated that Shiraishi contacted individuals prone to suicide via social media and invited them to his home under the pretext of helping them. However, it was revealed that he murdered these individuals and dismembered their bodies.
