The events in Iran, which began on December 28 against the rising cost of living and quickly turned into anti-regime protests, continue to grow. Following these developments, it was claimed that US President Donald Trump was briefed on alternatives for military intervention in Iran, and that a direct military operation was not among these options.
It was stated that Trump has received briefings on different intervention plans in recent days, but has not reached any definitive decision so far. Unnamed US officials conveyed that Trump is making serious assessments regarding how the US should respond, due to his concern over the increasing loss of life in the country's protests.
In a statement he made over the weekend, Trump expressed his views by saying, "Iran is perhaps seeking freedom more than ever before. The US is ready to help."
Conflicting information is coming from different sources regarding the loss of life in the protests in Iran. The Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that 30 security personnel lost their lives in Isfahan province alone, and that the total number of security personnel who have died since the protests began has reached 109.
The US-based Human Rights Activists (HRA) organization, on the other hand, claimed that 420 civilians, at least 8 of whom were children, lost their lives during the demonstrations. Therefore, a definitive consensus on the actual death toll in the events has not yet been reached.
