Turkish authorities have announced that they will not allow the mine-hunting ships transferred by the UK to Ukraine to pass through the straits. It was stated that this would constitute a violation of the 'Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits'.

The London administration stated in an announcement last month that it would transfer two Royal Navy mine-hunting ships to the Ukrainian Navy to help strengthen Ukraine's maritime operations in its war with Russia.

The Presidency's Directorate of Communications stated that NATO member Turkey has informed its allies that it will not allow the ships to use the Istanbul and Çanakkale straits as long as the war in Ukraine continues. The Presidency also added that Turkey is implementing the Montreux Convention impartially and meticulously to prevent the escalation of tension in the Black Sea.
