The United Nations (UN) has announced that a total of 11 thousand 700 civilians have lost their lives in the war in Ukraine so far. UN officials called on the leaders of member states attending the 79th General Assembly session to make every necessary effort to end the war in Ukraine.
A session was held at the UN Security Council regarding Russia's attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, at the request of Ecuador and France.
Briefing member states there, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya drew attention to the fact that the situation in Ukraine is steadily worsening.
11 THOUSAND 700 CIVILIANS HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES
Msuya stated that the death toll is rising and the suffering of the people has reached 'unbearable levels,' reporting that 11 thousand 700 civilians have lost their lives and 24 thousand 600 civilians have been injured so far.
Pointing out that 10 million people are currently forcibly displaced in Ukraine, Msuya expressed deep concern that large-scale attacks have been ongoing across Ukraine since August 26 and that the conflict has spread to new areas along the Ukraine-Russia border.
Msuya stated that 130 thousand people have been displaced as a result of military operations in the Kursk region of Russia. Pointing out that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure have also been carried out there, Msuya said, "All parties must protect civilians and civilian objects in accordance with international humanitarian law."
14.6 MILLION PEOPLE ARE WAITING FOR AID
Msuya stated that the increase in military activities is complicating humanitarian aid operations and endangering aid workers.
Stating that 1.4 billion dollars have been contributed to the humanitarian aid fund announced for Ukraine this year, Msuya noted that this remains insufficient and that 14.6 million people across Ukraine are in need of aid.
Msuya called on the leaders of member states preparing for the 79th UN General Assembly session to evaluate all opportunities to end the war in Ukraine.
