Units affiliated with the 'Freedom of Russia Legion', the 'Russian Volunteer Corps' (RDK), and the 'Siberian Battalion' announced that they crossed the Ukraine-Russia border on the morning of March 12, entered the Belgorod region, and captured the village of Lozova Rudka.

The groups carrying out the attack consist of Russian volunteers affiliated with the Ukrainian army. These groups had previously attacked Belgorod. On the other hand, it was also alleged that the groups might be linked to sabotage attacks carried out within Russia.

Russian opposition politician Ilya Ponomaryov, known for his proximity to the Freedom of Russia Legion, made a statement claiming that clashes were taking place in Tyotkino in Russia's Kursk region. The governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, confirmed that volunteer groups had invaded Russian territory. As a result of the attacks carried out in the morning, Russia has lost territory within its own borders for the first time since the beginning of the war.

The 'Freedom of Russia Legion', one of the groups that carried out the attack, published a video on their Telegram and X accounts. The following messages were given in the published video:

"Like all our fellow citizens, we dream of a Russia freed from Putin's dictatorship. But we don't just dream: we are making every effort to realize these dreams... We will take back Russian land from the regime centimeter by centimeter... Russians will sleep peacefully, they will not be afraid of the doorbell, they will speak their minds without fear. Russians will vote for what they want, not for what they have. Russians will live freely. We are going to the elections. Wait for us!"

On the other hand, the Siberian Battalion also shared footage of the clashes on their Telegram channels. The following message was shared along with the footage:

"We previously stated that it would not be possible to overthrow the criminal dictatorial regime in the Russian Federation through peaceful means. This can only be eliminated with weapons in hand. Tonight, we began to fulfill our promise. Fierce clashes are taking place on Russian territory."

DENIAL FROM THE RUSSIAN MINISTRY OF DEFENSE

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that there were attempted attacks. In the ministry's statement, it was argued that the groups' attempts to seize Russian territory were 'repelled with the help of war machines, missiles, and artillery'.

According to the AFP news agency, Russian sources say on Telegram channels that a clash took place but no progress was made.

Ukraine's Suspilne news site comments that the attack in Belgorod was not a military but a politically motivated attack. Attention is drawn to the fact that the attacks were carried out before the elections to be held in Russia this week.
