US imposes sanctions on Colombian President Petro
The US Department of the Treasury has announced that Colombian President Gustavo Petro has been placed on a sanctions list on the grounds that he played a role in the global illegal drug trade and provided various privileges to drug traffickers.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has decided to impose sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro. In a statement from the US Department of the Treasury, it was stated, "The Department will impose sanctions on President Gustavo Petro due to his role in the global illegal drug trade. Under President Petro's administration, cocaine production in Colombia has reached record levels.
Petro has provided various privileges to narco-terrorist organizations. Under President Trump's leadership, we will not allow Colombia to smuggle drugs into our country and poison the American people," the statement read.
The statement also noted that in addition to President Petro, his wife Veronica del Socorro Alcocer Garcia, his son Nicolas Fernando Petro Burgos, and Colombian Minister of the Interior Armando Alberto Benedetti are also targets of the sanctions.
SECRETARY BESSENT: PETRO ALLOWED CARTELS TO STRENGTHEN
US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent also stated on his social media account, "President Petro allowed drug cartels to strengthen and refused to prevent it. Today, President Trump is taking decisive steps to protect our country and to make it clear that we will never tolerate the smuggling of drugs into our borders."
US President Donald Trump threatened to increase customs duties on Colombia last week and announced on Wednesday that all funding provided to Colombia had been terminated.
