US President Donald Trump held his first cabinet meeting following his inauguration. Before the meeting at the White House, Trump and his cabinet members prayed. Elon Musk, head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), also attended the meeting. Making statements before the session, Trump announced that a valuable minerals agreement would be signed with Ukraine, noting that this deal would increase the US presence on the ground.
Trump announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would visit the US on Friday and that a strategically important critical minerals agreement would be signed between the two countries. "This agreement will ensure the US is on the ground, and this will create an automatic security shield, because while we are there, no one will be able to mess with our people," Trump said.
When asked about a potential deal to end the Ukraine-Russia war, Trump replied, "You can forget about NATO. I think that is probably the reason why everything started."
Stating that Ukraine has great potential regarding critical minerals and rare earth elements, Trump said, "We need rare earth elements and other resources. This agreement will provide us with a major economic advantage."
ANNOUNCED STRATEGIC MEASURE AGAINST CHINA
Trump stated that the US is working to regain control of Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, noting that this move is a strategic measure against China. "Bagram is only an hour away from where China produces nuclear missiles. Therefore, we should be there not because of Afghanistan, but because of China," Trump said.
Trump expressed that the US has provided billions of dollars in aid to Afghanistan but that these expenditures would be reviewed, adding, "I think we should get back some of the military equipment left there."
"GOVERNOR TRUDEAU"
Reiterating his rhetoric that Canada should become the 51st state of the US, President Trump said, "We are already supporting Canada economically. If we cut off these subsidies, they cannot sustain their existence. No tariffs, nothing, and let us provide them with military protection." Trump also remarked on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying, "I think he is a very good man, I call him Governor Trudeau."
RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR AND PEACE TALKS
Stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin must make peace with Ukraine, Trump said, "If we had not been elected, this war would have continued for a long time. I believe Putin would want to take everything. But now, Putin will have to make concessions to end the war."
Expressing that peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are progressing, Trump said, "When we were in office, no one was talking to Russia. But when I arrived, one of my first meetings was with Putin, and they showed us great respect."
President Trump stated that a deal on valuable minerals with Ukraine would contribute to ending the war, adding, "We do not want to watch young Russian and Ukrainian soldiers being killed. Ensuring peace is our priority."
When asked about lifting sanctions on Russia, Trump said, "It is not part of the deals right now; I want to see if we can make a deal first. Then we will do it."
TARIFFS AND BUDGET DEFICIT
Evaluating the US economy, Trump said, "We have to lower inflation and bring prices under control." Regarding tariffs, he stated that they plan to impose a 25 percent tax on the European Union, adding, "The European Union was established to destroy the US economically, and they have succeeded well at that. But from now on, we will protect US interests."
Trump also noted that Elon Musk is working to modernize the US economic system and reduce government spending, stating, "The DOGE team is doing a great job. We will achieve significant savings by modernizing the government's computer systems."
"THE US IS ON THE BRINK OF BANKRUPTCY"
Taking the floor at the meeting, Elon Musk stated that the US is facing a massive budget deficit, saying, "As a country, we are under an unsustainable debt burden. If things continue this way, the US will effectively go bankrupt. This is the reason I am here, receiving a bunch of plaques, and getting a bunch of death threats in the meantime." Musk claimed that the federal government operates inefficiently and that billions of dollars are being wasted.
IMMIGRATION POLICY AND GOLD CARD PROGRAM
Trump recalled that the US is developing a new immigration policy and mentioned a special program he calls the "Gold Card" for highly skilled immigrants, explaining that this program will offer an expedited citizenship process for immigrants who commit to investing in and starting businesses in the US.
Trump said, "If there are talented people we want to keep in the country, we must give them the opportunity to stay in the US. This new program will offer great opportunities for those who invest in the country and create jobs."
