US Special Envoy for Syria Barrack meets with SDF leader Mazlum Abdi

US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack is continuing his contacts in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq, where he arrived following his meetings in Iraq. Barrack met with Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Jalal Talabani and Mazlum Abdi, the leader of the SDF, the Syrian branch of the terrorist organization PKK/YPG, in the city of Sulaymaniyah.

In a statement released by the PUK Press Office, it was noted that PUK Politburo member Qubad Jalal Talabani was also present at the meeting, and that the discussion addressed the implementation process of the agreement signed between the SDF and the Syrian government on January 29, 2026, as well as the removal of obstacles in this process. The statement indicated that the meeting emphasized the need to respect the rights of all components in Syria, and conveyed a message of support for efforts aimed at stabilizing the region and enabling the Syrian state to resume an effective role in the international community.

During the meeting, the parties also stated their readiness to contribute to a political roadmap that would protect the rights of all sides in Syria.

Barrack had previously held meetings in the KRG city of Erbil with Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani, KRG President Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
