As conflicts continue between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, the US State Department has approved the sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.
In a statement released by the Department, it was noted that the request included 48 F-35 aircraft, 49 Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 engines, communication equipment, spare parts, and similar support materials.
The Department announced that the sales request, valued at approximately $24.3 billion, has been approved. The statement said, "This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major non-NATO ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Gulf region."
It was noted that the sale in question would strengthen Saudi Arabia's national defense, increase its deterrent capacity against current and future threats, and enhance cooperation with the US and other NATO forces.
The statement added, "The sale will also improve Saudi Arabia's operational aircraft, as well as its air-to-air and air-to-ground defense capabilities. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces."
