US Supreme Court rejects Trump's request to postpone 'hush money' sentencing

The US Supreme Court rejected Donald Trump's request to postpone the sentencing hearing in his 'hush money' case in a 5-4 vote, clearing the way for the hearing to proceed. This decision means that Trump will be sentenced in the New York court on January 10, 2025. Judge Juan Merchan will announce the sentence to be given to Trump today.

Trump is accused of illegally paying hush money to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election. As a result of the investigation launched by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, Trump was found guilty on 34 separate counts. The trial process, which began in New York on April 15, 2024, lasted 6 weeks and resulted in the jury finding Trump guilty.

The Supreme Court, which rejected Trump's request to postpone the sentencing hearing, had previously ruled that Trump had "immunity for some actions" regarding the January 6 Capitol riot and allegations of interference in the 2020 presidential election. However, the court stated that it did not grant immunity for Trump's private conduct.

MAY BE CONVERTED TO A FINE

The sentence in Trump's "hush money" case could include up to 4 years in prison and a fine. Trump has denied the charges, arguing that the payment process was legal.

After his request was rejected by the appeals court in New York the day before yesterday, Trump had knocked on the door of the Supreme Court, the final authority, yesterday. However, the Supreme Court rejected the appeal, confirming that the sentencing hearing would take place.
