The US has suspended the Caesar sanctions it imposed on Syria for 180 days, excluding transactions linked to Iran and Russia.
The US Department of the Treasury issued a new statement following the meeting held at the White House between Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara and US President Donald Trump. The department announced that the Caesar sanctions imposed on Syria have been suspended for 180 days, with the exception of transactions linked to Iran and Russia.
The department stated that this decision replaces the temporary exemption granted on May 23 and was taken to maintain diplomatic dialogue with Syria's new administration.
Experts stated that the decision serves to support the reform efforts of the transitional government in Syria and aims to promote regional stability.
CAESAR SANCTIONS
The Caesar sanctions, which the US began implementing against Syria in 2019, included heavy economic sanctions targeting Bashar al-Assad and individuals and institutions linked to him. While the full lifting of the sanctions requires Congressional approval, the US President is permitted to suspend the sanctions on the grounds of national security.
