Vehicle attack in Germany: 2 dead, 3 injured

It has emerged that the incident in the German city of Leipzig, where a vehicle drove into a crowd, was not an accident but an "attack."

Saxony State Interior Minister Armin Schuster stated at a press conference that 2 people lost their lives and 3 people were seriously injured in the vehicle attack, describing the attacker as "a serial killer." Schuster announced that the perpetrator is a 33-year-old German resident of Leipzig who was already known to the police.

Schuster said, "It is a horrific attack. Based on the current situation, we are dealing with a lone-wolf attacker."

Leipzig Prosecutor Claudia Laube, speaking at the press conference, stated that an investigation is being conducted against the suspect on charges of two counts of murder and at least two counts of attempted murder, adding, "As Interior Minister Schuster stated, we are proceeding with the assumption that this was a brutal attack."

"We are in shock over what happened"

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung described the incident as "brutality," saying, "We are in shock over what happened. We have two deaths and, as of now, several injured, 3 of them seriously. It is impossible to describe this horrific attack with words. My thoughts are with the victims and their families."

Leipzig Police Chief Rene Demmler reported that the suspect did not resist while being taken into custody and is being held under police supervision.

Eyewitnesses stated that the attacker drove his SUV-type vehicle into the pedestrians on Grimmaische Street at a speed of 70-80 kilometers per hour.

According to the initial assessment by authorities, there is no political or religious motive behind the attack. According to officials, a domestic dispute may have triggered the attack.
