The intensity of the war in Syria is escalating once again. While hundreds of soldiers have lost their lives in the clashes that have recently resumed between the Syrian army and Druze militants, particularly in the As-Suwayda region, Israel has also become directly involved in the developments.

Following the intense clashes in recent days, a major explosion occurred in the capital, Damascus, today. In its first statement regarding the explosion, the official Syrian news agency SANA stated, “A loud explosion was heard in the capital, Damascus. The source of the explosion is being investigated.”

PRESIDENTIAL PALACE STRUCK

Immediately after the explosion, eyes turned to Israel. In a statement regarding the incident, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, “The Israel Defense Forces continue their operations in accordance with instructions from the political echelon and are prepared for various scenarios.” The same statement reported that Israel had targeted the Syrian General Staff headquarters building in Damascus.

However, the attack did not stop there. In its second airstrike on Damascus, Israel directly targeted the Syrian Presidential Palace.

'ATTACKS WILL CONTINUE'

Israel also announced that it has decided to increase its military presence along the Syrian border line. In a statement made by the Israeli Army Spokesperson, it was stated that military reinforcements would be made in the border region following the developments in As-Suwayda. The statement also noted that the Israeli army is “conducting situation assessments to determine the necessary reinforcements at the border within the framework of operational objectives.” The Israeli army also emphasized that it would “continue both defensive and offensive actions.”

The Israeli army's statement also included that individuals attempting to cross into the Syrian side via the Golan Heights were intervened against. It was reported that individuals attempting to cross the border from Syria were detected in the Hader region, and that Israeli forces prevented these individuals from crossing and intervened to disperse the crowd.

The Israeli press wrote that some Syrian Druze headed toward the Golan region following the events in As-Suwayda. Furthermore, it was stated that some individuals from the Israeli-occupied Majdal Shams crossed toward Syria. It was stated that Israeli soldiers made efforts to stop these crossings and bring back those who crossed the border. Information was shared that the Israeli army is closely monitoring the current situation and is “standing ready for different scenarios for defense and offense.”

SYRIAN PRESIDENCY REACTS

The Syrian Presidency reacted to the events. In a statement made by the Presidential Press Office, the events that took place in some parts of As-Suwayda were condemned, stating that they were “criminal and illegal” in nature. The statement said, “These actions are in complete contradiction with the fundamental principles of the Syrian state. Those responsible, whether at an individual or organizational level, will be held accountable before the judiciary. No crime will go unpunished.”

While it was stated that the state considers protecting security and stability as its primary priority, it was noted that a comprehensive investigation into the events is ongoing and that all necessary legal processes will be carried out.
