A volcano near Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, has become active. According to Reuters, numerous earthquakes had been occurring in the region for weeks prior to the eruption.

For this reason, authorities evacuated approximately 4 thousand people from the area to safe zones last month. It was stated that the fissure from which the lava is rising is approximately 3 and a half kilometers long.

Police have warned citizens not to approach the area until further notice.

The lava and ash spewed by the volcano have forced the closure of the fishing town of Grindavik and the nearby Blue Lagoon.
