According to initial reports, 2 people lost their lives in the accident. While the majority of the injured were transported to hospitals, some of those on board were seriously injured due to debris falling from the masts. Officials announced that the two individuals who lost their lives died in the hospital after being taken there with serious injuries caused by debris falling from the ship's masts.
2 OF THE INJURED ARE IN CRITICAL CONDITION
New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated in a post on a social media platform following the incident, "Currently, 19 of the 277 people on board have been injured. Two of them are in critical condition." Emphasizing that city officials responded quickly to the accident, Adams stated that they are working in coordination with Mexican authorities.
SUSPICION OF MECHANICAL FAILURE
New York Police Department (NYPD) Special Operations Bureau Chief Wilson Aramboles, in his statement regarding the accident, said that the ship's captain likely lost the ability to maneuver due to a "mechanical issue." Aramboles stated, "The captain maneuvering the ship, I think, lost power to the ship. We have strong suspicions that there were some mechanical issues." Aramboles noted that there were many sailors on the ship's masts during the incident and that these individuals were injured.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO THE INCIDENT
While an investigation into the incident has been launched by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), it was stated that the information provided is preliminary and that details will become clear as a result of the investigation.
THE SHIP WAS EN ROUTE FROM NEW YORK TO ICELAND
The Cuauhtemoc ship, which ran aground after striking the Brooklyn Bridge, was removed from the scene and towed to Pier 36 in New York. It was reported that the ship's route at the time of the accident was from New York to Iceland.
BRIDGE TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO TRAFFIC
According to information in New York's official emergency notification system, the Brooklyn Bridge was closed to traffic for approximately 40 minutes following the accident. New York Mayor Adams announced at a press conference that the bridge had been reopened to traffic following a preliminary inspection.
