US President Donald Trump has confirmed reports that he secretly changed planes on his return journey following the NATO Summit held in Ankara in July. Trump stated that the procedure was carried out under the guidance of security units.

Speaking after a Washington Post report claiming that Trump was moved to a different plane than the one announced to the public due to an Iran-linked threat, Trump argued that the plane he boarded was more vulnerable than Air Force One.

In his statement to reporters, Trump said, "I actually think the plane I flew on was at greater risk. I think it was at greater risk because I think that's the plane they would have preferred to target."

Emphasizing that the decision was not his own, Trump said, "Everything is up to the Secret Service. I just follow what they want to do; so I do whatever the Secret Service and the military say."

SECRET OPERATION ALLEGATION

According to the Washington Post report, the operation was carried out while journalists and some White House staff believed they were on the same plane as Trump. It was alleged that Trump boarded the old Air Force One-style jumbo jet in front of cameras, but was taken to a smaller C-32A plane via an airport catering vehicle a few minutes later.

The report, citing a US official, stated that the Air Force One carrying media members and some White House staff became a "decoy" during this process.

Democrats, meanwhile, have called for a briefing to Congress regarding Trump being secretly moved to another plane from the one the public and the press believed he was traveling on.

The administration had previously announced that Trump left Turkey on July 8th on the old Air Force One. Trump had also announced on his Truth Social account that he would use the "old Air Force One" instead of the new Boeing 747-8 that brought him to Turkey. The new plane in question had been a gift from Qatar.

The trip to the NATO Summit in Ankara was recorded as the new plane's first international flight. The plane's rapid refurbishment, cost, and security had previously caused controversy. The visit coincided with a period of escalating tensions with Turkey's neighbor, Iran.
