World population increased by 66 million

In a statement shared by the German Foundation for World Population (DSW), it was noted that the world population increased by approximately 66 million people in 2023. As reported by DW Turkish, it was stated that as of the beginning of 2024, 8 billion 73 million 859 thousand 407 people were living in the world.
Although this figure is the highest ever recorded, it was pointed out that the population growth rate in the world has been slowing down for decades.
According to United Nations data, the fastest increase in the number of people on Earth was seen between 1965 and 1970. However, since that date range, the relative increase in the world population has decreased by almost half.
The trend in Africa is different
According to the DSW, which points out that the slowdown in the world population growth rate is due to women having fewer children on average, the trend in Africa is developing in a different direction.
According to DSW's calculations, the African population is expected to nearly double from its current level to reach 2.5 billion by 2080.
It is stated that the population growth in Africa is linked to reasons such as inadequate sex education, the generally difficult access to birth control methods, and the lack of gender equality. According to experts, these negative factors often lead to women having many children at an early age.
