The world's largest iceberg, A23a, which is part of the Filchner Ice Shelf in northwestern Antarctica—once home to a Soviet research station—has begun to drift.
A23a, which covers a massive area of approximately 4,000 square kilometers, broke away from the seabed where it had been grounded for over 30 years due to global warming last November.
The iceberg, which separated from the Antarctic coastline in 1986, quickly grounded itself in the Weddell Sea and became an ice island before it began drifting again. When A23a first broke away from its grounded position last November, it was impossible to capture a clear image due to the dense fog in the Antarctic sea.
However, researcher Ian Strachan, who was attempting to locate it with an expedition ship from the company EYOS, shared his observations regarding the world's largest iceberg's drift at sea in a statement to AFP.
Ian Strachan, who encountered the drifting iceberg for the first time, stated that after the clouds cleared, they had the opportunity to see this white line stretching along the horizon as something almost abstract.
Ian Strachan noted that they observed massive cracks carved into the ice wall of the island that had begun to drift, as well as magnificent blue arches, and shared that some of the arches collapsed under the impact of 4-meter-high waves.
About 40 times the size of Paris
The tooth-shaped iceberg named A23a is about 40 times the size of Paris. The iceberg, whose weight is estimated to be about one trillion tons, reaches a thickness of 400 meters in some places.
The iceberg is even taller than the London Shard, which is Europe's tallest skyscraper at 310 meters. The ice island, which is moving toward the north of the Southern Ocean, is currently drifting in a region between Elephant Island and the South Orkney Islands.
Like most icebergs from the Weddell sector, it is almost certain that A23a will be caught in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and that this current will carry it toward the South Atlantic along a path known as "iceberg alley."
Could pose a problem for seals, penguins, and other seabirds
Scientists are closely monitoring the progress of A23a. This is because the possibility of it grounding in South Georgia could pose a problem for the millions of seals, penguins, and other seabirds that breed on the island.
The size of A23a could also disrupt the animals' foraging routes, preventing them from properly feeding their young.
However, the melting of the iceberg also allows minerals trapped in its glaciers to be released. These minerals form the primary food source for organisms that constitute the foundation of the ocean food chain.
