Explosion in a 14-story building in Beylikdüzü... WhatsApp messages revealed: The accident was waiting to happen

A violent explosion occurred in the morning hours on the ground floor of a 14-story building on Topçu Street in the Adnan Kahveci neighborhood of Beylikdüzü.

One person lost their life and 3 people were injured in the explosion, which was stated to have been caused by natural gas. The injured were taken to the hospital by medical teams, and it was announced that their lives are not in danger.

Following the explosion, numerous fire, medical, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. Fire crews continued search and rescue operations in the basement of the building.

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

The Istanbul Governor's Office included the following statements in its announcement regarding the explosion:

"On Saturday, December 7, 2024, at approximately 07:30, an explosion determined to be caused by natural gas occurred in the basement of a building on Topçu Street in the Adnan Kahveci neighborhood of Beylikdüzü. One person lost their life in the incident, and 3 people were injured. The injured individuals are not in life-threatening condition. The investigation initiated regarding the matter is ongoing."

GAS ODOR WARNINGS WERE IGNORED

According to a report by Ekol TV, it has emerged that there were messages regarding the smell of gas in the WhatsApp group used by the apartment residents before the explosion.

While some residents suggested calling 187 to report the situation, these warnings were not heeded. It was noted in the conversations that some residents who noticed the smell could not sleep throughout the night. However, no official report was made.
