Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who won the 2021-2022 Mayors Challenge Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Mayors Challenge with the “Pay-it-Forward Invoice” (Askıda Fatura) initiative he launched during the pandemic, has decided not to travel to New York, where he had been invited to receive his award and deliver an acceptance speech, due to developments in Palestine.

Speaking to Gerçek Gündem, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality sources stated that the invitation was extended at the beginning of September, and that while the global climate at that time was suitable for attending such a meeting, the decision not to go to New York was made following the escalation of the Palestinian issue.
