Forensic expert comments on developments regarding Narin Güran's moment of death: 'Those who hid her are devils'
In the Narin Güran case that has plunged Turkey into mourning, the lifeless body of the 8-year-old girl was found in a sack in the Eğertutmaz stream, covered with stones and tree branches. Following comments regarding the moment of death, Forensic Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Alkan made statements utilizing information from the autopsy report.
8-year-old Narin was found on September 8 in the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır, 1 kilometer from her own home, inside a sack in the Eğertutmaz stream, covered with stones and tree branches.
Responding to questions from Duygu Göktürk on TV 24, Forensic Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Alkan made noteworthy statements.
Forensic Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Alkan stated that a total of 91 biological findings and swab samples were collected, and expressed that the person who hid Narin is a complete devil.
INFORMATION LEAKED FROM THE PROSECUTOR'S RECORD
Answering questions about all the autopsy procedures performed so far on Narin's recovered lifeless body, Forensic Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Alkan explained as follows:
“First of all, it was reflected in the media as a 'pre-autopsy,' but there is no such thing as a pre-autopsy! The information reflected in the media is information leaked from the prosecutor's record prepared after the 12-hour autopsy process in Diyarbakır. Narin's lifeless body, which was found at 08:45 in the morning, was first examined for death at the Diyarbakır Forensic Medicine Institute in the presence of a prosecutor.
The entire body was examined for visible sharp-force or blunt-force trauma, or gunshot wounds, and internal bleeding. Afterwards, samples were taken from the skull; brain, cerebellum, chest; heart, lungs, and abdomen; liver, spleen, and other organs.
Since there is also a suspicion of sexual abuse, samples were likely taken from the genital and rectal areas as well. In fact, the prosecutor's report states that a total of 91 biological findings and swab samples were collected to serve as the basis for molecular and genetic examination. Thus, the autopsy was completed and burial permission was granted.”
"IT MAY BE RELEASED BY MONDAY"
"Normally, an autopsy report takes at least 3 weeks and at most between 2 to 8 months to be released, but since the President also said, 'I am following the case closely,' the forensic medicine department has put all other work aside and focused on this case. I estimate it will likely be released either by Friday or Monday."
"IT WILL BE EXAMINED BY A TEAM OF EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELD"
‘‘Samples taken from organs such as the liver and lungs, as well as the brain, will be examined in detail under a microscope. We call this a histopathological examination. This examination provides important information such as whether there is a lesion on the body or if she was killed by suffocation.
In addition, poison will be sought in the liver, kidney, blood, and urine samples taken. DNA examinations will be performed. Then, this data will be combined to determine the cause and time of Narin's death.
The Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine will perform this process. Because all samples will be examined by a team in the first board at the main center, consisting of a forensic pathologist chair, 2 forensic pathologist members, and one expert each from branches such as general surgery, obstetrics, cardiology, and pediatrics.”
"THE BROTHER WOULD HAVE SAID IT DURING INTERROGATION"
Regarding the question of whether the brother could be a part of the murder, Forensic Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Alkan explained as follows:
"I don't think any progress can be made regarding the teeth because the problem with the bite mark on the brother's arm was that; I believe 9 days had passed. Now, wounds clearly show tooth marks at first, but if we bite our arm, it first turns red, then purple, then green, then purple again, the lesion characteristics disappear and it remains as a large bruise.
At that time, the forensic medicine department said, 'We could not determine whether it was Narin's or not.' If that's the case, they still won't be able to determine it. There will still be no determination now, but the part about whether the bite mark on the brother belongs to Narin or not is something that could be resolved during interrogation.
I think if such a situation existed, the brother would have said it during the interrogation. Because, after all, an interrogation is a serious matter. I am not of the opinion that the brother will be cleared, but many people currently see the brother as a suspect."
"IT HAS SLOWED DOWN DECOMPOSITION"
Among his answers, Forensic Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Alkan also said;
"Although 19 days passing makes the job a bit difficult, it is not impossible. A result will definitely be reached. The fact that Narin's lifeless body was found in water, I say this with a forensic pathologist's approach, is positive. Since the water was 23-24 degrees, the decomposition of the body has slowed down. Again with the same approach, the fact that the lifeless body was placed in a sack is also positive. Since it was not affected by the current, the evidence was not lost. There are certainly some other details that came out of the autopsy that we do not know. The investigation is likely continuing in light of these details, in the form of cross-examination."
THERE IS NO INDICATION OF SEXUAL ABUSE
"If there is sexual abuse at the end of the autopsy, it will definitely come to light. If the body had been thrown directly into the water; fish could have eaten it, the current could have damaged the body, and evidence could have been lost, but the stream water is fresh water. Additionally, since the body was in a sack, it was not affected by any potential current. For a body found on the 19th day—I say this in forensic pathologist terms—it was found in the best possible condition. If it had remained outside in the open air, it would have decomposed as much as 19 days, but because it was in water and in a sack, it decomposed as much as 7-8 days. Therefore, whatever happened will undoubtedly be revealed."
"DO NOT MISUNDERSTAND DROWNING"
“When we say suffocation, do not misunderstand it as drowning in water. We are talking about a suffocation mark caused by covering the mouth and nose or strangling the neck. There are bones in the throat called the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage. If she was killed by strangulation with hands, a rope, or another object, this bone breaks. This has definitely been checked.
"THOSE WHO HID HER ARE DEVILS"
“If she had been buried in the ground, she would have been found much faster and easier because it is much easier to detect freshly dug soil with a drone. If they had thrown her into a field, in 40-degree heat, the smell would have emerged due to decomposition and she would have been found. If they had thrown her directly into the water, there is a pond further ahead, she would have eventually come out from there. So they set up such a mechanism... They both dug the inside of the stream, reinforced it with stones, and put her in a sack, covering it with stones and plants. So we don't know who killed Narin yet, but those who hid her (which I don't think is the work of a single person) are devils.”
"THE PROBABILITY OF FORCE BEING USED IS HIGH"
Regarding the detachment of the left leg from the knee down, Forensic Medicine Specialist Alkan said, “Bones like the shinbone do not break off due to decomposition. Connective tissues do not decompose in 20 days, not even in 3-5 years. In this case, the probability of force being used is high. However, it seemed to me that this information might not be accurate either.’’
“I THINK NARIN WAS KILLED IN THE LATE AFTERNOON”
“I think Narin was killed in the late afternoon. But because it got dark early and they couldn't turn on lights, they came early in the morning, around 6-7, when the sun rose, and set up this mechanism and buried Narin.
"WE KNOW HE DELETED THE MESSAGES WITH A SPECIAL PROGRAM"
Forensic Medicine Specialist Alkan made statements such as, “We know that the uncle, the village headman who is in custody, downloaded a special program to his phone and deleted the messages with that program. As far as I know, the messages have not been recovered yet. If you told me 'go do this,' I wouldn't know how it's done. We are facing an evil that follows technology closely, you figure out the rest.”
