RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin: 'I cannot watch TV series with my wife and daughter'

RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin: 'I cannot watch TV series with my wife and daughter'

The 4th Media Meeting Consultation Meeting, held in cooperation with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), took place at a hotel in Şişli with the participation of producers, screenwriters, and actors.

RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin stated at the meeting that claims such as "If this series were on that channel, it wouldn't get a penalty" are incorrect, adding, "It is impossible; there are series that would get penalized anywhere. There are series that would not face sanctions regardless of which channel they air on. This has nothing to do with the channel, it has nothing to do with my intellectual structure, it has nothing to do with my understanding."

Providing information on what producers should pay attention to, Şahin emphasized that the most criminal sanctions are applied in accordance with Article 8 of Law No. 6112 on the Establishment and Broadcasting Services of Radio and Television.

'SEXUALITY GETS THE HIGHEST RATINGS'

Emphasizing that they cannot ignore violations of the articles specified in the law, Şahin said, "There is a monster called ratings. Nothing happens without ratings, but are we going to cast aside all our values, our laws, and our social sensitivities just to get ratings? The subject that gets the most ratings is violence. Should we make shows that are entirely about violence? Should we make shows that are entirely about sexuality, which gets the most ratings?"

'I TURN OFF THE TV'

Stating that his wife and daughter are also "addicted to TV series," Şahin said, "I am telling you openly, we cannot watch series together. I cannot watch TV series with my wife and daughter. There are moments where I turn off the TV. You might say, 'How nice, there is a remote, he can turn it off.' Do you think everyone has this level of awareness?"

Ebubekir Şahin underlined that society is influenced by TV series and their characters, stating, "We live in a society where people are influenced by series and name their children after series characters. We live in a society where our time zones are set as 'before the series' and 'after the series.' We live in a society where, because a series character died, a memorial service is held for them—as is the case here (Oktay Kaynarca)."
