Sinan Ateş trial to be held in Sincan

It has been decided that the first hearing of the case opened regarding the assassination of Sinan Ateş will be held at the Sincan Penal Execution Institutions Campus between July 1-5. The court has completed the preliminary proceedings report for the file.

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had filed a lawsuit at the Ankara 32nd High Criminal Court against 22 defendants, including former Ülkü Ocakları executive Tolgahan Demirbaş, regarding the incident on December 30, 2022, in the Çukurambar district of Ankara, where Sinan Ateş was killed by gunfire and his companion Selman Bozkurt was wounded.

The court has completed the preliminary proceedings report for the file.

SECURITY CONCERNS

The preliminary proceedings report also ordered that witnesses Ahmet Keçik, Gönül Ergin, and Yusuf Mert be brought to the hearing by force and be present.

It was also decided to write to the police to determine the full identity and address information of Yavuz S., who was mentioned in the statement of defendant Aytaç Ataç and was stated to be at his workplace on the day of the incident.

The court also decided that the hearings should be held in the hall at the Sincan Penal Execution Institutions Campus, citing "sensitivity regarding the security of the trials, the large number of defendants, and the inadequacy of the courtrooms at the Ankara Courthouse."

SİNAN ATEŞ MURDER

On December 30, 2022, former Ülkü Ocakları President and academic Sinan Ateş was subjected to an armed attack by Eray Özyağcı, who was hiding behind a vehicle, along with his relative Selman Bozkurt on 1456th Street in the Kızılırmak neighborhood of Çankaya.

One bullet fired by Özyağcı hit Bozkurt, and five bullets hit Ateş. Bozkurt was wounded in the shoulder, while Ateş was seriously wounded and died at the hospital where he was taken.

According to the autopsy report, of the five bullets that hit Ateş; one entered through his chin and exited the top of his head, one entered his left abdomen and exited his lower back, and while an exit point was found for a bullet that entered his left leg in the groin area; no exit point was found for another bullet that entered from the same place and a bullet that entered his right groin.

The attack was referred to in the press as the "Sinan Ateş murder," "Sinan Ateş assassination," or "Çukurambar murder," and Ateş was declared a martyr by some individuals. Ateş is the second Ülkü Ocakları president to be shot and the first to die as a result of being shot.
