Kurtulmuş defends himself after targeting the Constitution: 'Perception management'

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş had targeted Article 3 of the first 4 articles of the Constitution, which are unchangeable and cannot be proposed for change.

Kurtulmuş had said, "The phrase 'The indivisible integrity of the state with its territory and nation' needs to change. The state does not have a territory. The state does not have a nation. This text should be expressed as 'The indivisible integrity of the nation with its state and territory'".

Kurtulmuş's words drew a backlash on social media.

HIS RESPONSE WAS 'PERCEPTION'

Responding to a question asked to him about this issue, Kurtulmuş stated that discussing the first 4 articles would 'harm the process' and said the following:

"I have stated this before. There is no discussion regarding the first 4 articles. Initiating a discussion about the first 4 articles harms the process. Creating a false perception as if an issue regarding the third article was being brought up in my speech at Gazi University is, to put it mildly, perception management. It is impossible for me to accept this. The third article was not mentioned anywhere in my speech. Contacts were made with all political parties during the last legislative year. No political party closed the door categorically. What we have in mind is for a constitution to be accepted in parliament with a very large consensus, with a vote well over 400. We are continuing our efforts for this."
