The Istanbul Theatre Festival has appointed director, actor, and academic Prof. Dr. Mehmet Birkiye as the curator for its 28th and 29th editions, to be held in 2024 and 2025.
Birkiye, a prominent representative of the deep-rooted Kent Oyuncuları (City Players) tradition who has directed numerous plays throughout his career and contributed to the academic field both at the Istanbul University State Conservatory and the Department of Drama and Acting at Istanbul Aydın University, which he helped establish, will serve as the curator of the Istanbul Theatre Festival for a two-year term.
'AN EXCITING RESPONSIBILITY'
Regarding his new role, Mehmet Birkiye stated: "The Istanbul Theatre Festival is a gateway to world theatre. Many theatre professionals have been introduced to world theatre by passing through this door. I can easily say this for myself, at the very least. Now, thinking that I will also contribute to keeping this door open is an exciting responsibility."
The 28th Istanbul Theatre Festival, to be prepared under the curatorship of Mehmet Birkiye, will meet art lovers in October-November 2024.
