Fatih Altaylı writes about why major firms are fleeing Turkey

Recently, news has been emerging one after another about major firms deciding to withdraw from Turkey. While these withdrawals are being met with concern in economic circles, Fatih Altaylı has brought these developments to his column on his website.

Stating that firms are leaving Turkey at a great speed, Altaylı explained the underlying reason in his article with the following remarks:

"Volkswagen was going to build a giant factory to produce in Turkey, then suddenly, for no reason, VW abandoned the investment.

Honda closed its factory in İzmit, and not only did it close it, but it also sold the factory along with everything inside it, left Turkey, and departed.

Ford announced some time ago that it had abandoned a 1 billion dollar investment it had previously announced it would make in Turkey.

Yesterday, BP, which had been operating in Turkey for 112 years, left Turkey by selling its investments in the country for a pittance.

A few years ago, I received this response from a gentleman I met at a 'charity' dinner in London: 'We are used to doing business in Turkey, but we had never experienced a period where we felt insecure due to lawlessness.'

The fact that so many foreign firms are leaving Turkey one after another is not a good sign at all. You cannot say to capital, 'Those who leave, leave; those who stay are ours.'

When you do say that, you might suddenly find that there is no one left at all!"
