Fatih Altaylı comments on Ogün Samast's release: 'He might be posing with certain political party leaders tomorrow or the next day'
Ogün Samast, the murderer of Hrant Dink, who lost his life 16 years ago in an armed attack in front of the Agos newspaper building on Halaskârgazi Street in Şişli, was released on parole yesterday evening. Journalist Fatih Altaylı commented on Samast's release.
Ogün Samast, the murderer of Hrant Dink, who lost his life as a result of an armed attack in front of the Agos newspaper, has been released on parole.
"THE GOVERNOR WAS SHOCKED"
Commenting on Samast's release, Altaylı said the following:
"It is not surprising. When that murder was committed, I was the Editor-in-Chief of Sabah newspaper. The Governor of Istanbul was Muammer Bey. We had discovered that the killer was Ogün Samast in Trabzon 1 hour later. I called the Governor and asked if he would make a statement. He said, 'We are still searching, identifying, etc.' I said, 'Are you looking for Ogün Samast?' The Governor was shocked."
I also revealed and wrote about Erhan Tuncel's role in this murder. All hell broke loose. The Erhan Tuncel issue was one of the most important journalistic events of that period.
"MY FEAR IS THAT..."
Unpleasant photos were taken of Ogün Samast in front of a Turkish flag at a gendarmerie station. He was turned into a hero by some.
When we remember those days, this release today does not seem very strange to me. I even kept thinking about whether they would release Ogün Samast and his likes under the table without anyone noticing.
My fear is that Samast might be posing with certain political party leaders tomorrow or the next day. I fear that our eyes might see that too."
SAMAST IS OUT, GENERALS ARE IN
What is strange here is this: Samast stayed in prison for 16 years and was released on parole. In contrast, who is inside? Generals aged 85-90, who have lost their mental faculties, are inside as defendants in a case that has clearly emerged as a conspiracy. Osman Kavala, whose crime no one knows, is inside, journalists are inside. The so-called Gezi convicts are inside, while Ogün Samast is outside. This could actually be a perfect example to describe the point Turkey has been brought to."
