Up to 7 years in prison sought for journalist Nevşin Mengü on charges of terrorist organization propaganda

A lawsuit has been filed against journalist Nevşin Mengü, seeking a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months to 7 years and 6 months, on the grounds that she engaged in propaganda for the terrorist organization PYD/YPG in a video she published on her social media account.

The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office states that the defendant, Mengü, publicly shared an interview on her social media account with Salih Müslim, the leader of the PYD/YPG terrorist organization, who is currently sought under a red notice.

EVALUATED UNDER THE CRIME OF TERRORIST ORGANIZATION PROPAGANDA

The indictment states that Mengü disseminated Salih Müslim's remarks, which were intended to consciously legitimize and spread the organization's separatist goals, as well as his statements that legitimized the organization's methods involving force, violence, or threats, or encouraged the use of such methods.

Pointing out that the video was viewed thousands of times, the indictment noted that Mengü's actions should be evaluated under the crime of "engaging in terrorist organization propaganda."

The indictment requests that the defendant, Mengü, be sentenced to 1 year and 6 months to 7 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of "engaging in terrorist organization propaganda through press and media."

The indictment also mentions that a judicial control decision was previously issued against Nevşin Mengü for "praising a crime and a criminal," but states that Mengü, who was present in the broadcast as a presenter, did not make any statements that could be construed as praising a committed crime or a person for a crime they had committed.
