In Saraçhane, where protests against the conviction of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu are ongoing, an unidentified group engaged in a provocative act and directed insults at AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his family.
The incident drew successive reactions from the CHP. Following CHP leader Özgür Özel, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and his wife Dilek İmamoğlu, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş also expressed his reaction.
Yavaş stated the following in a post on his X account:
"We must conduct our politics and our objections with a moral and respectful language.
No matter who it is, casting aspersions on a politician's family, and especially cursing at their mother, is never acceptable.
Those who engage in such ugliness cannot represent those seeking justice.
Expressing one's opinions is everyone's most natural right. However, if boundaries are crossed while exercising this right, if insults are made, and especially if the sacred memory of a mother is disrespected, this is no longer a protest, but a clear lack of decency.
Using these ugly words as an excuse to try and overshadow the rightful objections of millions does not suit anyone."
