Responding to journalists' questions at the reception, Özel stated that they have not closed the doors on constitutional amendments, but that certain conditions must be met.
Speaking about his appointment with President Erdoğan, Özel said they hope it will take place in a positive atmosphere and yield results.
"IT WOULD BE LIKE AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT"
Stating that he will consult with previous CHP chairmen before his meeting with AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan, Özgür Özel said, "We can call this a working visit to which both sides attach importance.
We both have agendas, and we will follow those agendas in the meeting. Once the appointment is finalized after the request, our colleagues may perhaps conduct a brief preliminary negotiation in accordance with state traditions and our political culture, and then we will hold the meeting.
For me to announce the meeting agenda here would be like an open letter to the President," he stated.
STATEMENT ON EARLY ELECTIONS
Speaking about constitutional amendments, Özel expressed that it would be wrong to say anything definitive without listening to President Erdoğan. Stating that they would contribute to negotiation talks if they see the necessary progress regarding the government's compliance with the constitution, Özel said that any demand for early elections would be disrespectful to the voters, that they did not ask for votes in the local elections to demand this, and that they would not ask for early elections unless the nation demands it.
Answering a question about whether they would meet again after his meeting with AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan, Özel said, "These are bilateral relations; it depends on how everyone arrives at that meeting and how they leave, and whether they find that meeting productive when they leave.
This is a two-sided thing. In politics, if both sides are satisfied, if society is satisfied with this, and if the faces of the people are smiling—making people smile is the job of politicians. But if it is a futile effort, then it will not be repeated. I hope for a meeting that will be repeated and from which we can get results," he said.
