A fake diploma investigation has been launched into Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is a candidate in the primary election that the Republican People's Party (CHP) will hold on March 23 to determine its presidential candidate.
Hürriyet columnist Nedim Şener shared details regarding the investigation in his column titled, "YÖK has identified the irregularity, the word is with Istanbul University."
"As stated in the YÖK report, the procedures regarding recognition, lateral transfer, lateral transfer quotas, announcement periods, and acceptance of lateral transfers by the Dean's Office of the Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration—where an irregular lateral transfer was made from a university in the TRNC that lacks equivalence—were carried out through a process that was suspicious at every stage, not in accordance with the decisions and procedures of the Council of Higher Education." Şener stated, pointing to Istanbul University to have the final say on the process:
"The prosecutor's office will uncover the issue in depth, but the final word regarding the diploma that Ekrem İmamoğlu obtained irregularly will be spoken by Istanbul University, which has remained silent from the very beginning."
