Report on femicides in Turkey released: 'Impunity provides encouragement'

The Federation of Women Associations of Turkey's newly published report reveals that femicides in Turkey have reached alarming levels. While the number of women killed in July reached 28, a total of 249 women have lost their lives in the first seven months of this year.

One of the most painful details highlighted in the report is that a five-year-old girl was among the women killed. Additionally, it was noted that the oldest victim was 88 years old. It was stated that the majority of the women killed lost their lives after being shot with firearms and that a large portion were killed in their own homes.

SOCIAL VIOLENCE HAS INCREASED

According to the report by Cumhuriyet, Canan Güllü, President of the Federation of Women Associations of Turkey, emphasized that Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention is an indication that policies to prevent violence against women have been abandoned.

Güllü said, "Women have become unable to know who to turn to for support. As social violence increases, femicides are also affected by this situation."

IMPUNITY PROVIDES ENCOURAGEMENT

Güllü stated that the rise in social violence also triggers violence against women, expressing that impunity in the legal system provides encouragement to perpetrators of violence.
