Former Ülkü Ocakları President Sinan Ateş lost his life in an armed attack in Ankara on December 30, 2022.

Before he was killed, Sinan Ateş had served as an advisor to MHP Secretary General İsmet Büyükataman.

In a message to his close friend Ömer Çağrı Özdemir, to whom he had sent a photo of a vehicle that had come in front of his office, Sinan Ateş had said, "Talk to İsmet Bey. I don't want blood to be shed." Six days after this correspondence, Ateş had messaged Ömer Çağrı Özdemir again, saying, "The friends have decided to kill me, Ömer brother. They are constantly escalating the environment."

It was reported that after the threats were conveyed to İsmet Büyükataman, Büyükataman had said, "Such a thing would not happen." Following the murder, İsmet Büyükataman did not make any statement regarding the Sinan Ateş murder. The Ateş family had been reacting to Büyükataman for this reason.

MHP Secretary General İsmet Büyükataman shared the words of MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli from the MHP Group Meeting on his social media account. Regarding the Sinan Ateş assassination, which he called "a murder that has been referred to the judiciary," Büyükataman posted, "It is no coincidence that our party and the Ülkü Ocakları are being blamed in the murder case, and that the backs of agents and provocateurs who roll up their sleeves to cast a shadow of a criminal organization on the Ülkü Ocakları at home and abroad are being patted. We know them all, we are following them all, and we share with the whole world that we have no account that cannot be given."

Sinan Ateş's wife, Ayşe Ateş, responded to Büyükataman's social media message. Pointing out the closeness of their family and noting that Sinan Ateş's daughters called İsmet Büyükataman "grandpa," Ayşe Ateş published the following message:

"Oh İsmet Büyükataman! Oh honorable person in a position of authority! You, the nobody who tramples on their humanity with the seat of this century that begs for loyalty from people. Your post is in need of explanation. Come, let's correct it. It is not a murder case that has been referred to the judiciary.

It is a political murder where you did not take any initiative to prevent the brutal killing of the person you called 'my child' even though you knew he would be killed, where you watched his slaughter in the middle of the street while munching on sunflower seeds, and where you chuckled at the tears of my daughters who called you 'grandpa' after he was murdered.

It is a political murder where the vast majority of those who are imprisoned and those who are under investigation as murder suspects are members of the Ülkü Ocakları and the MHP. As I said: Your post is in need of explanation. It appears that your existence is also in need of humanity."
