While the objection to the detention of Barış Pehlivan, a columnist for Cumhuriyet who is being held at the Maltepe Open Prison, has been rejected, his lawyer Hüseyin Ersöz stated that Pehlivan will remain in custody until March 2024.
Regarding Pehlivan's legal process, Ersöz said, "There are only two options left before us for Pehlivan to regain his freedom. First, we will file a legal appeal against this decision and strive for the process to move forward quickly."
Speaking to Cumhuriyet, Ersöz explained the other path as follows:
"There is an ongoing case following a complaint filed by a Court of Cassation member, which led to the revocation of the probation measures for Barış Pehlivan. If Pehlivan is acquitted in the hearing of this case, which was opened on charges of 'insulting a public official due to their duty,' in November, it would be possible for a new probation decision to be issued for Barış Pehlivan, and for him to regain his freedom at that point. However, no matter how you look at it, we estimate that the conclusion of this process will take at least another one or two months, and that Barış Pehlivan will spend this 1-2 month period at the Maltepe Open Penal Institution."
