Higher Education Council President's statement on diplomas: 'It does not guarantee a profession'

Council of Higher Education (YÖK) President Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar spoke at the conference titled "Reshaping Career Planning: Closing the Gaps," held as part of the "International Career Days" which began at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Culture and Congress Center.

Özvar made a statement regarding the rising unemployment among university graduates in the country, saying:

“A diploma is indeed valuable, but it is not a master key that can open every door on its own. In other words, a university education provides a diploma, but it does not directly guarantee a profession. We must act with this reality in mind, both as parents and as students. University life should be viewed as a great experience in every sense. Universities are institutions where extracurricular achievements are gained, cultural and social skills are developed, and new horizons are opened for individuals. Regardless of which university or department they study in, young people should never give up on improving themselves and gaining new skills. In addition to theory-based learning, they should place importance on practical applications and extracurricular achievements that will prepare them for the future.”
