Classic and contemporary plays to be staged at Istanbul City Theatres

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theatres have announced the plays they will present to theater lovers between December 27 and 30.

WAR AND PEACE

In a play where wars and battles, as well as historical figures like Napoleon and Kutuzov, form the backdrop, love stories, personal weaknesses, family conflicts, and losses create a panorama that extends from society at large to each individual character in the play. Written by Leo Tolstoy, adapted by Eva Mahkovic, translated by Aslı Önal, and directed by Aleksandar Popovski, the play will be at the Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage between December 27 and 30.

TARTUFFE

The play tells the story of a wealthy man who, without listening to anyone in his family or circle, ruins his own life and the lives of those around him because of a fraudulent hypocrite. Written by Molière, translated by Orhan Veli Kanık, and directed by Yiğit Sertdemir, the play will be at the Kağıthane Sadabad Stage between December 27 and 30.

I SMILE AT LIFE

The play conveys the warm and familiar life stories of women from different social classes who are not considered worthy of being told. Written and directed by Özen Yula, the play will be at the Üsküdar Musahipzade Celal Stage between December 27 and 30.

OH, CARMELA!

The author of the play, which tells the story of the civil war period between nationalists and republicans in Spain, is Jose Sanchis Sinisterra. Translated by Yalçın Baykul and directed by Naşit Özcan, the play will be at the Ümraniye Stage between December 27 and 30.

REQUIEM FOR A ROSE

The play questions the concepts of honor, tradition, and morality around the story of Güldünya, who became a symbol of honor killings in Turkey after being murdered by her family. Written by Deniz Altun and directed by Özgür Kaymak, the play will be at the Gaziosmanpaşa Stage between December 27 and 30.

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

The struggle of Dr. Stockman, who obtains a result from his research on the city's only source of income, the thermal springs, that confirms his suspicions, turns into a "parable" told by Ibsen's powerful pen about how what is considered the "public good" changes shape through the prism of self-interest. Translated by Dilek Başak Carelius and directed by Orhan Alkaya, the play will be at the Müze Gazhane Prof. Dr. Sevda Şener Stage between December 27 and 30.

THE PASSAGE

The relationship between a landlord and a sharecropper who take a break on a mountain pass during their journey is essentially a summary of the story of property ownership and the oppressor-oppressed dynamic that humanity has struggled with since its existence. Written by Cem Düzova and directed by Nihat Alptekin, the play will be at the Beylikdüzü Yakuplu Rasim Öztekin Stage on December 30.

MOSQUITOES

Alice, who works at the Large Hadron Collider, has a husband who is also a scientist, and their child Luke disappeared when he was young; this is the black hole in their lives. Written by Lucy Kirkwood and directed by Ali Gökmen Altuğ, the play will be at the Müze Gazhane Meydan Stage between December 27 and 30.

SWAN SONG

In Swan Song, one of Anton Chekhov's short one-act plays, we witness an elderly and lonely actor confronting his past, questioning his life, his regrets, and despite all the years that have passed, still trying to hold on to the thing he does best in life: acting. Directed by Bora Seçkin, the play will be at the Üsküdar Kerem Yılmazer Stage between December 27 and 30.
