Director Yılmaz Atadeniz's dream remains unfinished

Yılmaz Atadeniz, one of the master directors of Yeşilçam, passed away at the age of 91. Following Atadeniz's sudden death, it has emerged that his planned documentary project on Göbeklitepe remains unfinished.

Yılmaz Atadeniz, who directed unforgettable films such as 'Dağların Oğlu' (Son of the Mountains), 'Kahreden Kurşun' (The Damning Bullet), 'Kan Gövdeyi Götürdü' (Blood Ran Everywhere), 'Aslanların Dönüşü' (Return of the Lions), 'Çirkin Kral' (The Ugly King), and 'Silahların Kanunu' (Law of the Guns), passed away last week at the age of 91.

'OUR GRIEF IS GREAT'

Yılmaz Atadeniz's daughter, Işık Atadeniz, stated, "My father developed an infection in his lungs. We lost him. Our grief is great."

GÖBEKLİTEPE PROJECT REMAINS UNFINISHED

According to information obtained from Emrah Soğukpınar, with whom he worked on the project, the master director Yılmaz Atadeniz had been working for some time on a new documentary project to be submitted to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism regarding Göbeklitepe, described as the "zero point in history," and the ancient cities recently unearthed in the surrounding provinces.

Despite his advanced age, Atadeniz, who never stopped producing, had filmed the documentary 'Nuh'un Kutsal Şehri: Cize' (Noah's Holy City: Cizre) last year with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Following Atadeniz's sudden death, his new documentary project has been left unfinished.

WHO IS YILMAZ ATADENİZ?

Yılmaz Atadeniz was born on February 1, 1932, in Istanbul.

A graduate of Kabataş High School for Boys, Atadeniz stepped into cinema by starting work at the Erman Film Studio following the sudden death of his older brother, Orhan Atadeniz, who was an editor and film director. Yılmaz Atadeniz, who directed over a hundred films, was also the founder of many unions and associations.

Atadeniz, who was the founder of the Sine-Sen (Sine-Kamder) association and served as its president for two terms, had been a member of the Board of Directors of the Film Producers Association since 1988. The master director, who served as Jury President at the 2nd Ankara Film Festival in 1989 and the Golden Boll Film Festival in 1992, served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of SE-SAM (Turkish Cinema Works Owners Professional Union) between 2007 and 2020.

Yılmaz Atadeniz, who received hundreds of awards, most notably the Honorary Award he received at the 45th Antalya Film Festival in 2008, passed away in Istanbul on December 13, 2023.
