Maurice Ravel's favorite work: Daphnis and Chloe to be performed in Istanbul
The Tekfen Philharmonic will perform the Turkish premiere of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphnis and Chloe', one of his most important ballet scores, at the Lütfi Kırdar Congress and Exhibition Center on March 28.

The Tekfen Philharmonic, under the baton of Principal Conductor Aziz Shokhakimov, will perform this magical work by Ravel—who set the 2,000-year-old love story by the Ancient Greek author Longus to music for orchestra and wordless choir—together with the Magma Philharmonic Choir, led by Conductor Masis Aram Gözbek.
The music will be accompanied by a narration from the beloved, Cannes-award-winning theater artist Merve Dizdar, under the direction of Yiğit Sertdemir.
ABOUT DAPHNIS AND CHLOE
Maurice Ravel's work, which he described as a "choreographic symphony," is inspired by the story of the same name, estimated to have been written by the Ancient Greek author Longus in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD.
Considered the first example of pastoral narrative in world literature, the story has served as a source of inspiration for many writers, poets, sculptors, painters, and musicians for centuries.
Ravel composed the story, which tells of the love between Daphnis and Chloe—who were abandoned as infants and raised by families of sheep and goat herders, respectively—in 1909 upon the commission of the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes dance company, to be performed by an orchestra and a wordless choir.
