The trial regarding the murder of 8-year-old Narin Güran, whose lifeless body was found 19 days after she went missing on August 21 in Tavşantepe village in the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır, begins on Thursday, November 7 (tomorrow). A warning was issued to media organizations by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) ahead of the hearing.
RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin said, "We expect a sensitive, responsible broadcasting policy from our media that adheres to professional journalistic principles during the trial phase of this tragic event."
Ebubekir Şahin used the following expressions:
"The first hearing in the murder case of our daughter Narin Güran will be held tomorrow. During the initial investigation phase of this horrific murder, our media displayed an irresponsible attitude that did not suit it, violating the confidentiality of the investigation and broadcasting based on hearsay, disregarding human dignity. We expect a sensitive, responsible broadcasting policy from our media that adheres to professional journalistic principles during the trial phase of this tragic event. The victim in question is an innocent, tiny child. The expectation of the entire Turkish nation is that those responsible receive the punishment they deserve."
'WE WILL MONITOR CLOSELY'
Ebubekir Şahin stated that while there is no broadcasting ban in place while the hearing is being held, confidentiality is essential due to the nature of the trial.
Şahin continued his words as follows:
"It is unacceptable for news and information that could negatively affect witnesses or disrupt the trial process to be irresponsibly used as media fodder for the sake of more views or clicks. It is essential that the trial be followed with a conscientious approach and the dignity befitting our media, and that accurate information be reported and shared with our public. At this stage, our RTÜK monitoring experts will closely follow the broadcasts in our media. In cases of violations of broadcasting principles, necessary sanctions will be applied against those responsible without delay."
