Canpolat attacks İmamoğlu without naming him: You cannot run a municipality with AKP's repurposed staff
As the 38th Ordinary Istanbul Provincial Congress of the CHP, where the Istanbul Provincial Chair and 196 convention delegates will be determined, continues at the Haliç Congress Center, Cemal Canpolat took the stage and stirred up harsh winds in the hall.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Congress is being held today at the Haliç Congress Center. The struggle between the party's Headquarters supporters and the 'change-makers' has moved into the congress hall.
The two candidates competing for the Istanbul Provincial Chair, Özgür Çelik and Cemal Canpolat, took the stage after a short break at the congress. Canpolat, who took the stage after Çelik, attacked Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu without naming him.
Here are the highlights from Canpolat's speech:
- "We are living in a period where the traditions of the CHP are being questioned more every day. The booing of Ms. Canan Kaftancıoğlu is not an act consistent with CHP traditions. I condemn the booing of Canan Kaftancıoğlu, who was sentenced to 9 and a half years in prison for this party and whose own children were targeted, here on command. I cannot stomach CHP members getting jobs alongside other parties. I am only happy to hear that CHP members are getting jobs during district, neighborhood, and delegate elections. I cannot accept a period where you hire people just so that the CHP organization delegates will vote for you. The era of CHP members getting jobs through the IYI Party will end as of Sunday.
- The Istanbul organization knows what we do and where we come from; the Gazi neighborhood knows, Küçükçekmece knows. During our time as provincial chair, we worked on the streets together with workers and laborers. I am coming to complete the march that was left unfinished. CHP delegates will not sell their honor and dignity for a job or a position.
- No mayor is on my list; I put the organization on the list. I say it once again, mayors will withdraw to their own areas. They will practice public-oriented, social, leftist municipalism. You cannot run a municipality with the repurposed staff of the AKP. If you take sides in organizational affairs, you will find the other side against you. No mayor should put the CHP organization under pressure, making your own district chair a parliamentary candidate or provincial chair. You are choosing a private secretary, not a provincial chair for yourselves.
İMAMOĞLU HAD SPOKEN OF REVOLUTION, CANPOLAT RESPONDED
Cemal Canpolat's words, which included the expressions, "I will confront those who say 'they ate a crumb of this party.' If we speak, you won't be able to go out on the street. Even those who have never been involved in a revolutionary struggle in their lives, who are not leftists, are talking about revolution; this is a beautiful thing. On my list is the father of Berkin Elvan, who was killed at the age of 14 while going to buy bread during the Gezi resistance," stirred up harsh winds in the hall.
In his speech at today's congress, İmamoğlu, who gave a message of "revolution," had said, "When this nation sees an option that will enrich Turkey and build a strong and fair Turkey, it will carry it to power without hesitation. This is exactly what this nation wants: for the CHP to come to power. This is the national need that we cannot ignore. Our most urgent and important duty is to present the option of coming to power to our nation together. The people are telling us to make the CHP a revolutionary and populist party that strengthens and lifts it up." İmamoğlu had stated, "We will win Istanbul. This journey is a journey to victory. At the end of this journey, the CHP and the nation will win."
