Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer was detained yesterday morning as part of a 'terrorism' investigation, and searches were conducted at his home, in his vehicle, and in his office at the municipal building. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office alleged that Özer 'was assigned a role in the democratic autonomy project by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and that documents related to this were delivered to Kandil.'

According to the prosecutor's office, Özer has '14 communication records with 694 individuals who have judicial records due to membership in a terrorist organization, as well as with KCK executive Remzi Kartal' over a 10-year period.

Following his statement to the prosecutor, Özer was arrested on charges of 'being a member of the PKK/KCK armed terrorist organization,' and Istanbul Deputy Governor Can Aksoy was appointed as a trustee in his place.
