Tech giant Apple is increasingly positioning its Watch smartwatch series as a health device. It is said that the existing advanced activity and health tracking capabilities will be further enhanced next year. So much so that Apple is reportedly set to introduce additional features such as blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea detection to an Apple Watch with an updated design in 2024.
THEY WILL APPEAR WITH MORE FEATURES IN 2024
As reported by Donanımhaber citing Bloomberg, Apple will launch the first version of its "groundbreaking blood pressure sensor" technology, which will also include hypertension detection, for the new Watches next year.
The 2024 Apple Watch models will offer a journal for the user to note when their blood pressure tends to rise and what happens when hypertension occurs. To potentially avoid a misdiagnosis, this feature will direct the user to talk to their doctor or to a traditional method that can provide full systolic and diastolic measurements.
According to Mark Gurman, a future version of the system currently under development could provide precise figures and even diagnose related conditions. However, it is stated that these developments are "still a long way off." Additionally, an Apple Watch-based sleep apnea detection feature will arrive in 2024. According to the report, this feature will use sleep and breathing patterns to estimate whether a person has this condition and then direct users to see a doctor.
APPLE WANTS TO MAKE ITS WEARABLES EVEN MORE HEALTH-FOCUSED
Previous reports had also stated that Apple was working on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. Apple will use a new silicon photonics chip to determine glucose concentration in the body. Since the glucose monitoring system is designed similarly to the blood pressure system, it will track how a person's blood sugar is trending rather than offering a real blood sugar value, and will warn users about pre-diabetes. However, according to Gurman's latest report based on people familiar with the work, it seems unlikely that Apple's blood glucose monitoring efforts will appear in a product for "at least a few years."
Beyond the Apple Watch, Apple is also said to be on track to bring hearing detection features to AirPods in 2024. Equipped with the new feature, AirPods could function as an over-the-counter hearing aid and perform hearing tests typically conducted in audiologists' offices.
In addition to these, it is said that Apple continues to explore ways to turn its upcoming Apple Vision Pro headset into a health device. It is stated that work is underway on a virtual reality system to strengthen positive thinking and improve mental health, alongside anti-anxiety and advanced meditation features.
