Massive fine for TikTok from Europe
The European Union has imposed a 530 million euro fine on TikTok for transferring user data to China and failing to comply with transparency rules.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), the European Union's personal data regulator, has concluded its investigation into TikTok. Following the review, it was determined that TikTok transferred European user data to China and violated transparency rules during this process.
The DPC announced that TikTok has been fined 530 million euros for these violations and that the company must bring its operations into compliance with EU rules within six months.
The fine was issued because TikTok failed to provide sufficient information to its European users regarding data transfers and did not adhere to transparency standards.
The Irish Data Protection Commission had previously imposed a 345 million euro fine on TikTok in 2023 for similar violations. The fact that many major digital platforms in Europe operate out of Ireland gives the country a significant role in this area.
Under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Irish data authority has the power to fine companies that violate the rules up to 4 percent of their global turnover. This represents serious financial sanctions for large platforms like TikTok.
