Obesity is seen as one of the world's biggest health problems. Every year, millions of people lose their lives due to diseases that develop as a result of obesity. The new capsule developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, relies on a swallowable capsule for obesity treatment.
NEW DISCOVERY IN OBESITY TREATMENT
This USB-sized capsule has a structure that vibrates inside the stomach. These vibrations create the perception that the person's stomach is full and help create a misleading feeling of satiety.
In the study published in the journal Science Advances, researchers conducted a series of experiments. The animals on which the experiment was conducted were given these satiety-inducing capsules approximately 20 minutes after eating. It was discovered that the capsule not only stimulates the release of hormones that signal satiety but also reduces the animals' food intake by approximately 40 percent.
Traditional obesity treatments can be very costly and sometimes painful. For example, gastric surgeries. However, this device is both cost-effective and could allow people to lose weight more easily without painful surgeries.
Researchers know that the capsule needs to be tested further. It is seen as exciting that even such an effect could have a significant impact on the use of this in obesity treatment.
