Plant geneticist Gebisa Ejeta receives National Medal of Science
Ethiopian scientist Gebisa Ejeta has been awarded the National Medal of Science in the U.S. for his work in the field of plant genetics.

In a statement issued by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ejeta was congratulated for being deemed worthy of the award due to his contributions to the science of plant genetics.
Ejeta, who received his award from U.S. President Joe Biden, is known as one of the world's leading plant geneticists.
IN 2009, HE DEVELOPED A DROUGHT AND PARASITE-RESISTANT HYBRID SORGHUM
Known for his work on sorghum, Ejeta received the World Food Prize in 2009 for developing a drought and parasite-resistant hybrid sorghum.
Sorghum is widely cultivated, especially in hot regions of Africa, and is consumed by both humans and animals.
Having spent his childhood in Ethiopia experiencing hunger and food insecurity, Ejeta focuses his work on removing the obstacles to food access.
