Scientists have succeeded in developing a biodegradable, wireless energy-receiving device capable of powering bioelectronic implants. According to the study published in the journal Science Advances, led by researchers from Lanzhou University, the prototype of this system is both biodegradable and highly flexible.
The article notes that although biodegradable power supply units have been developed previously, they are generally single-use and lack sufficient energy production for biomedical applications.
The new study reports that this device was developed in response to the need for a new unit capable of generating the correct amount of power.
The purpose of this subcutaneous wireless charger is to offer high energy storage performance and preferred tissue-interfacing properties. Developing a biodegradable device here is quite important because devices offering similar functions require surgery to replace their batteries, which makes the process cumbersome.
The prototype of this new device offers much more practical use due to its biodegradable structure. The device's module, which includes a magnesium coil, is notable for consisting of a zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor.
Further research is needed for the device to be used in medicine and many other fields, but even in its current state, this invention is enough to give us an idea of what future chargers might look like.
